One of the things I like most about the Madrona neighborhood is how removed it can feel from the city while being 15 minutes from everything. Set along the western shore of Lake Washington, just east of downtown Seattle, Madrona is primarily residential, with beautiful tree-lined streets, different kinds of architecture (no cookie cutters here), Lake Washington and Cascade Mountain views, and a small neighborhood center that gives it a personality all its own.

The heart of Madrona is around 34th Avenue and E Union Street. It has a small village feel which is part of its appeal. One of my all-time favorite restaurants for brunch, the Hi Spot Café, has been there for decades in a converted Victorian house. I've been going there for more years than I'll admit, and take everyone I know there! Other neighborhood favorites include Bottlehouse and Vendemmia, along with a fishmonger and local pub and mean you don't have to leave Madrona for coffee, dinner or a very good bottle of wine. Check out the post I did as a tour for you here: Madrona.

The homes in Madrona are part of what makes its streets so interesting. The neighborhood grew with Seattle's early streetcar system, and today you'll find early 20th-century Craftsman homes and grand older residences alongside all sorts of other styles. Because Madrona slopes toward Lake Washington, some of these homes also have spectacular views across the water toward Bellevue and the Cascades.

Madrona also has a history that is worth knowing. The neighborhood played an important role in Seattle's Black community and civil-rights history, and several Madrona properties have been designated Seattle landmarks. The former Fire Station No. 12 is now the Madrona-Sally Goldmark Branch of the Seattle Public Library.

For me, Madrona's appeal is really the combination: lake and city, historic and contemporary, quiet residential streets and a genuinely useful little neighborhood center. It feels established without feeling boring, and uniquely Madrona.
